PROJECTS
UW MEMORIAL LIBRARY GRADUATE LEARNING CENTER
The University of Wisconsin Madison envisioned the creation of a private reading room for both collaborative and individual study with the goal to enhance recruitment and retention of graduate students. An existing library administrative space was reinvigorated by providing an inspirational, flexible space for study and community building. The design concept, playfully referred to as “louvers and planes”, developed intimate screened study spaces while allowing natural light and visibility through the different gathering areas and collaborative zones. Illuminated soffit planes were used to further define spaces and create visual interest. The design incorporates an open and customizable floor plan, allowing for accessibility and accommodation of all modes of study at various times of day. We prioritized modern technology in the space by including individual lighting controls, an abundance of power outlets for devices and display screens with wireless access for collaboration.
